Barry University is a private, Catholic university in Miami Shores, a village in Miami-Dade County, in the US state of Florida, a suburb northeast of Downtown Miami, with a population estimated at a number of more than 10 000 inhabitants, during the 2005 census. The university was established in 1940 and it was initially a women's Catholic college, becoming a university and adopting its current name, in November, 1981.
Barry currently has a total enrollment of more than 9300 students, and offers nursing, business, health sciences, teacher education and liberal arts programs, including more than 60 traditional undergraduate programs, accelerated bachelor's programs designed specifically for working adults, and more than 50 graduate programs, through 9 schools, which include: School of Adult and Continuing Education, School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences, School of Law (Dwayne O. Andreas), and Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine.
Barry's Miami Shores athletic teams are known as the Buccaneers, which compete in NCAA Division II, in the Sunshine State Conference, in various sports for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are red, black and silver, and their mascot is Bucky the Parrot.
